A COVID-19 Safe Environment
Hygiene has always been particularly important within Penguin Rehab & Release, both for our safety and that of the birds in our care. As such a main focus of our work is cleaning - enclosures / aviaries, pool, intensive care areas, equipment used to prepare feeds.
Our COVID Safe Plan is an extension of the procedures we already had in place providing an environment suitable for social distancing, cleaning schedules, and the appropriate PPE for the tasks undertaken.

"Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." - William James
"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do." - Edward Everett Hale
Penguin Rehab & Release is comprised of dedicated volunteers working with local environment and penguin groups in order to protect penguins, other seabirds, shorebirds and their habitats. It is networked with community members throughout the North-West of Tasmania who are passionate about penguins, and who wish to help in a practical way.
With no paid staff, it is our wonderful volunteers who undertake the many and varied roles that are a part of seabird rehabilitation. The biggest job we have is cleaning! (There is a lot of bird poo!) Also:
Our environment is the irregular and unusual and sometimes frenetic world of penguin rehabilitation. You never know what the day will bring! Routines, plans and schedules can fly out the window at a moment's notice.
Whether the volunteers come every day or just once in a blue moon, this help means that we can have more birds in care and that we can get more birds back out into the wild. And in doing so, we have a sense of community ownership, not just of the birds in care, but also for our coastal and marine areas. This is our place, and we look after it.
That is what we do. But, it's also about connecting with people - coffees and lunches, early mornings and late evenings, talking and listening, laughter and tears, learning and doing. It is friendship and community.
