What We Do
Welcome to Penguin Rehab & Release. We are a registered charity and a Landcare Tasmania community group, and established the first facility in the North-West of Tasmania dedicated to rehabilitating penguins, and other seabirds, that come into care due to illness, injury or misadventure, with the aim of preparing them for successful release back into the wild.
Run entirely by volunteers, we work closely with Tasmania's foremost seabird carer (Lesley Kurek), our regional vets, and the department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE).
Established through grants from local councils and generous donations from individuals and businesses, we opened on 27th November 2018. Grown beyond all expectations due to the high demand, our operating costs are covered by donations from individuals and businesses, near and far. Heartfelt thanks to all!
Penguins and most other seabirds are protected species, and all birds come into care under the appropriate permits from Wildlife Services, NRE.
Although not open to the public, we can still offer you a glimpse into our world through our website and facebook page. We hope you find them both entertaining and informative.
